John Brunelle

John Brunelle, executive director of Capital City Development Corporation, has been recognized for his achievements in supporting the city’s economic vitality and enhancing its quality of life.

In naming him a “2021 CEO of Influence” in June, the Idaho Business Review noted Brunelle’s success in encouraging businesses, citizens, and government agencies to work together on projects that benefit the city and its residents:

“He has significantly influenced the built environment and economic growth of downtown Boise. CCDC recently topped $1 billion in construction value via the public-private partnership program that Brunelle implemented in 2013. Under Brunelle’s leadership, CCDC has redeveloped nearly 500 acres of urban landscape, which has led to partnerships with local, regional, and national development firms.”

Prior to becoming head of the agency in 2013, Brunelle spent 25 years in both the private and public sectors in Boise, Portland, and Seattle, including stints as president and co-owner of the Idaho Stampede basketball team and as an economic development coordinator for the Boise’s Office of the Mayor. In 2018, on behalf of CCDC, Brunelle accepted the prestigious Gold Award for Public Private Partnerships, the highest honor given annually by the International Economic Development Council.

“I think a CEO has the responsibility to be a role model for the other employees in the organization,” Brunelle told IBR. “And along with being a role model comes a responsibility to show integrity, show empathy, show concern and compassion for our employees, and make sure that they know where they stand and what’s expected of them.”

Brunelle said he sees the IBR award as “recognition for CCDC, and the past and present board members and the employees of the agency who have really generated a beautifully built environment and helped the local economy grow in the city of Boise. … Lots of people have contributed, and I am grateful.”
